MS St. Gallen - Renovation
Installation of new, more efficient engines
Starting point
The flagship of the Schweizerischen Bodensee Schifffahrt (SBS), the St. Gallen motor vessel, was put into service in 1967 and has space for 650 passengers. After over 50 years of service, the ship was comprehensively renovated between October 2019 and March 2020. Shiptec AG installed the new engines.
Installation of new engines
Shiptec AG was responsible for renewing all of the technology. This involved the replacement of the drive motors and generators. Thanks to the new engines, fuel consumption will be significantly reduced, as will the maintenance and upkeep costs. Other technical components were also renewed as part of the renovation process. The shaft system was modernised and the steering gear brought up-to-date. The ship was equipped with a bow thruster and the air conditioning was also updated.
Additional information
At the same time as extensive technical renovation was taking place, the interior fittings were also renewed. The requirements for catering, interiors and technical installations changed due to the ship’s increased use as an event vessel. The interiors are consistent with the corporate design of the Restaurant Hafen and the MS Säntis, which were developed for the Schweizerische Bodensee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft. The architectural language of the refined materials bridges the gap between a nostalgic commercial passenger boat and the feeling one gets from a modern yacht. Modern lights in the ceilings create a nautical, glamorous atmosphere.
