Shiptec AG - a young company

Shiptec was founded in 2012 as a subsidiary of the Lake Lucerne Navigation Company (Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des Vierwaldstättersees - SGV). We are a dynamic company with a long tradition.

The founding period

1931 - Construction of the MS Mythen

The origins of shipping go back to 1835 when the steamship company was founded to transport people and goods from Lucerne to Flüelen.

The founding year of Luzerner Schifffahrtstechnik can be seen as 1931 , when the MS Mythen was constructed fully in-house for the SGV. It is worth highlighting that the principle of optimised lightweight construction was favoured and implemented in all subsequent new build projects. This meant that the superstructures of the ships were consistently designed and manufactured in an aluminium lightweight structure.

1950s – The first motor vessels are launched

In 1949, 1951 and finally 1955 , three medium-sized motor vessels were built in the SGV shipyard and put into operation – the MS Waldstätter, MS Titlis and the MS Rigi .

Further milestones followed in 1959 with the construction of the large motor vessels, the Schwyz, Winkelried, Gotthard and Europa.

After the newbuilds MS Brunnen, Flüelen, Weggis and the new MS Waldstätter were built between 1990 and 1998 in collaboration with German shipyards, the ship technology was strategically realigned from 2005 onwards.

Expansion to national waters

Instead of concentrating primarily on the ship technology of the SGV, work was specifically carried out on other Swiss bodies of water.

2000 – Construction of new motor vessels

The year 2008 saw the new construction of the MS David Herrliberger for use on Lake Greifen and 2012 the general renovation of the DS Neuchâtelfor Lake Neuchâtel.

Shiptec AG is founded – 2012

Due to positive business growth, the ship technology department became independent and in 2012 the company Shiptec AG was founded as an independent entity.

There was the acquisition of various trade and support agencies for established nautical products.

2014 - 2016 – Challenging projects

  • 2014: Realisation of the water lily project, an imposing floating platform with a diameter of over 40 m with a centrally aligned circular theatre stage system that could be partially closed using hydraulically operated surfaces. The entire shape of the platform was based on that of a water lily.
  • 2015: Full land-based overhaul of the Konstanz ferry for the Stadtwerke Konstanz public utility company on Lake Constance with an extremely short turnaround time of 10 weeks.
  • 2016: Renovation of the Italie steamship for the CGN on Lake Geneva, which involved the renovation and modernisation of the hull, superstructure and various equipment components.

2017 - 2018 – Shiptec nails its colours to the mast

  • Development and construction of new modern ships. Shiptec creates trends with modern designs and impresses with ecological drive systems.
  • 2017: Construction of the MS Diamant motor vessel.
  • 2018: Construction of the MS Bürgenstock , which is the first climate-neutral passenger ship in Switzerland thanks to its consistently lightweight construction and hybrid drive with a passenger capacity of 1,000 people.

2019 - today

  •  2019  Replacement of the drive motors on the St. Gallen motor vessel in Romanshorn on Lake Constance taking into account and complying with the current strict emission requirements for ship propulsion systems.
  • 2020  Delivery of the last of 14 patrol boats for the Swiss Army.
  • 2021  Installation of new engines for the Jungfrau motor vessel in Interlaken on Lake Brienz with the option to convert the installed drive concept over to fully electric operation in the future.

New engines and new buildings

  • In 2021/22 Shiptec developed the emergency boat "Shiptec Professional 13" for the police of the Canton of Fribourg and built it in Lucerne.
  • The cruise ship MS Heimat, Greifensee was re-motorised and is thus the first fully electric cruise ship in German-speaking part of Switzerland.
  • New motorisation of the motor vessel MS Berna, Lake Biel, with a modern hybrid energy and propulsion system - thanks to the conversion, the ship saves a considerable amount of fuel.
  • Naviexpress - Shiptec developed, designed and built two passenger ferries for commuter traffic in the Lausanne area on behalf of CGN SA. The two ships are built one after the other in the CGN workshop.
