New seawater chest for the Lake Constance ferry "Euregia"
Design and fabrication of steel structure and installation in the ship's hull
In January, our experienced and certified locksmiths were commissioned by Schweizerischen Bodensee-Schifffahrt AG to plan, fabricate and install a new steel sea chest for the ferry "Euregia". - Large steel constructions with complicated shapes are the daily business for the Shiptec employees.
The motorferry "Euregia" carries numerous passengers, cars, lorries and bicycles every day on the scheduled service between Friedrichshafen and Romanshorn. The ferry operates at hourly intervals all year round. The 60-metre-long ship, built in 1996, is licensed for 700 passengers. It is operated by Schweizerische Bodensee-Schifffahrt AG, SBS and the German Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe BSB.
The work was peppered with challenges to install the new sea chest precisely to size later in the ferry ship on site, this under consideration of a defined time schedule, in which the owner simultaneously carried out work under his own direction.
The sea chest was manufactured in 8mm S355 sheet steel according to the thickness of the outer skin and professionally welded to the outer skin and the existing bracing. The task of the sea chest is to ensure an optimal supply of the seawater-bearing systems. The seawater in the box is pre-cleaned. Thus, for example, the box remains filled with water at all times during heavy swells or at high speeds and ensures that there is always enough water for suction and that no air is drawn into the cooling circuit.
The seawater enters the sea chest through the outer skin opening, which is fitted with a protective grille. The sea chest is equipped with a coarse and fine filter, whereby the fine filter can be cleaned very easily and without major disassembly. Four outlets provide cooling for the generators.
The increased technical requirements of the FOT (Federal Office of Transport, FOT) for the acceptance of the installation were met in full.
