Starting point

The MS Gambrinus tugboat, built in 1893, was converted to a diesel engine propulsion system in 1928/29. The Escher-Wyss steam engine was replaced by a two-stroke diesel engine with four cylinders from Sulzer.

The diesel engine suffered damage in the winter of 2011/12. The housing of the diesel engine had large cracks in several places. Shiptec AG was then commissioned with the evaluation and installation of new engines in the ship and completed the work in August 2013.

Goals

Preparation of a renovation project for the preservation of historical monuments with subsequent installation of a Saurer diesel engine.

Challenges

Approval from the historic monument preservation trust for the installation of new engines and then the adjustments that had to be made for the new engines.

Thanks to Shiptec, a suitable replacement for the old Sulzer diesel engine was found; the historical monument preservation trust was staunchly against installing a brand new diesel engine in the old Gambrinus built in 1893. The Saurer diesel engine is now a worthy replacement for the Sulzer engine and runs perfectly thanks to Shiptec’s expertise! Excellent work on all sides from Shiptec.
