Starting point

Underwater archaeology is part of the archaeology and monument preservation department of the Office for Urban Development Zurich. This office sees itself as a service company for the city of Zurich, the canton of Zurich and the surrounding cantons, for which it fulfils the statutory mandate for the archiving, exploration, documentation, excavation and protection of underwater cultural assets.

The underwater archaeology task boats were getting long in the tooth and the old Meier SM58 motor vessel, built in 1986, was replaced by the new acquisition.

Goals

Supply of an aluminium boat with an outboard motor, which can be used for diving and salvaging finds and for the remote sensing of archaeological sites (e.g. boreholes). The boat must be suitable for all weather conditions, able to handle storms and be able to be used safely in the winter.

It will serve in particular as a:

  • Means of transport for dive operations and find salvaging, mainly in shallow water areas
  • Supervision and monitoring boat for the divers under water
  • Platform for sounding and drilling
  • Platform for measuring devices for the remote sensing of archaeological sites
  • Escort boat for prospecting dives

This required a max. hull depth of 50 cm with a load of 1.2 tonnes; a bow door that can be lowered down to the water; a free work surface in front of the steering position of at least 10 m2.

Challenges

Licencing as a work boat in compliance with a noise level of 70 dB in the wheelhouse, combined with an outboard motor and an open cabin turned out to be the biggest challenge. The half-cab was converted into a fully enclosed cabin so that nothing stood in the way of the licence.

Communication, information and transparency were all very customer-oriented – a very professional collaboration all in all. We received an extremely robust and high quality task boat that significantly exceeded my expectations and that meets our needs perfectly.
