Stadt Luzern steamship
Complex general overhaul of the SGV’s flagship
Starting point
The DS Stadt Luzern was built in the Sachsenberg Rosslau shipyard in Germany in 1928. Since being put into service, the owner has given the DS Stadt Luzern four overhauls in 1946, 1961, 1969 and 1985 - 1989. Both the boiler and the main engine were still in their original condition before the general overhaul. While the boiler needed to be replaced, the main engine was able to be overhauled and retained.
Overhaul
From the end of September 2018 to the spring of 2021, the Stadt Luzern underwent a general overhaul in Shiptec AG’s shipyard. Not only did the boiler need to be replaced, all of the interiors were also fitted with new furnishings such as carpets, chairs, tables and a new kitchen.
The general overhaul cost around 13.2 million Swiss francs. The majority of the costs were borne by the SGV, while the Dampferfreunde Vierwaldstättersee association made a contribution of 4 million francs. The canton of Lucerne’s historical preservation trust also contributed one million francs. As a result, the Stadt Luzern steamship, along with the Unterwalden steamship, will be the second SGV ship to be listed under a preservation order.
The Stadt Luzern steamship was put back into operation on 1st May 2021 - there have sadly been no festivities to celebrate this due to the Covid pandemic.
