Study on CO2-free shipping in the Bernese Oberland
Together with partners, Shiptec AG has developed a study for CO2-free shipping in the Bernese Oberland
With the goal of climate neutrality by 2050, CO2 savings are necessary in all areas, including inland navigation - the second largest emitter in public transport in Switzerland. This is why BLS Schifffahrt AG, together with Shiptec, H2 Energy, FPT, KWO and ITZ, has developed a feasibility study for CO2-free shipping in the Bernese Oberland. Not only was the concept and an initial design for a ship with H2-electric propulsion developed, but the entire H2 ecosystem with H2 supply, logistics and refuelling was also examined. The study was funded as part of a project commissioned by the Canton of Bern together with the Wyss Academy for Nature.
The results of the study are clear: hydrogen-electric passenger ships in the Bernese Oberland could become a reality as early as 2026.
As the leading shipyard in Switzerland and a pioneer in the field of CO2-neutral ship propulsion systems, Shiptec AG is proud to have played a key role in this ground-breaking study for emission-free shipping!
